Library

ST Thomas Aquinas Senior High School was founded in January, 1952 by the Catholic Diocese of Accra as Boys’ Day school at cantonments – Accra to cater mainly for boys of Parents within the lower income group. The school started with fifty (50) students and five (5) teachers including the first Headmaster, the very Rev. Father Alphone Elsbend.

Despite the fact that the school was doing well academically over the years, it could not boast of any decent library. In fact, what served as a library was just a small room which was part of the administration block. In view of this, the Board of Governors, in 1989, gave approval to the request of both staff and students for the construction of a bigger, more spacious and well-equipped school library. The Parent-Teacher Association (P.T.A) accepted the idea and challenge for sponsorship. The Canadian High Commission readily accepted the appeal of the school for assistance and provided some building materials for the construction of the library. In 1990, work started on the project after the then Apostolic Pro-Nuncio, His Grace, the Most Rev. Archbishop Guisippe Bortello had cut the sod for commencement of work. And by the grace of God, the project was completed in 1993 during the administration of Rev. Father Batsa. Apart from the Canadian High Commission, the then catholic Archbishop of Accra, the Old Toms and P.T.A made significant contributions toward the project. Also, the staff and students made contributions either in cash or kind toward the project.

Currently, the library has only seven hundred and fifty (750) relevant books to serve a student population of over Two Thousand (2000). This is simply inadequate.
